BMC Collects 206,000 Tonnes of Construction Waste in Mumbai in 2026
Mumbai's BMC has collected approximately 206,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste between January 1 and October 18, 2026, surpassing the entire 2025 total as tighter monitoring and enforcement continue.
According to information released by the civic administration, around 201,000 tonnes of C&D waste was processed during the same period. The figures indicate that a substantial proportion of the collected material was sent for processing through the designated waste-management system.
The collection recorded in less than 10 months of 2026 has already surpassed the approximately 169,000 tonnes collected throughout the calendar year 2025. This represents an increase of about 46 per cent over the previous year's full-year collection, despite the 2026 figures covering only the period up to October 18.
The increase has been reported amid tighter tracking and enforcement measures by the BMC. The civic body's monitoring efforts are focused on ensuring that construction and demolition waste reaches authorised facilities instead of being dumped at unauthorised locations or handled outside the designated system.
The measures are being implemented under the direction of the High Power Committee, which is overseeing initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution in Mumbai. The latest collection and processing figures indicate the volume of C&D waste being brought into the formal waste-management network under the strengthened monitoring framework.
With more than two months remaining in the calendar year, the final C&D waste collection total for 2026 is expected to exceed the 206,000 tonnes recorded up to October 18. The figures highlight the increase in construction waste being tracked and processed through authorised channels compared with 2025, placing the focus on the BMC's ongoing efforts to strengthen waste management as part of Mumbai's air pollution mitigation measures.
